B-Cast Interview with Matthew Vadum [Updated]

The True Story of How St. Patrick's Day Became an Alcoholiday

St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland, which was a sorely contentious point with the Gaia-worshipping Druids, who hated what the bringing of Roman civilization did to their once-green, snaky isle.  The Irish Sheepsnake became irretrievably extinct.

For many generations, St. Patrick's Day was a day of national mourning over the loss of the once-indigenous species.  Then a very wise leader, Colm the Unfathomable, decreed that it would be wiser for the people of Ireland to souse their sadness over the loss of their venemous compatriots with massive quantities of liquor.  And so it has been.
