Subject: Public Option Helth Care Reform
Body: What we can all agree on is that the current state of health care in this country can be and should be optimized. Clearly, the system as it is now is in many ways inefficient and bloated. And there is a desire among the vast majority of the electorate to do something – anything – about it.

What we cannot afford is to turn over 1/6 of the nation’s GDP to the government. If anything has been demonstrated clearly, it is that the government cannot administer even very straight-forward social programs effectively. Specifically, one need only review the intentions of the recent so-called stimulus bill and cash-for-clunkers initiatives against the outcomes – both intended or unintended – to realize that government cannot at this time properly handle what would prove very simple oversight exercises in the private sector.

And this is unfortunate, as if government had a demonstrable track record of success with programs like Medicare, one could argue that it would be capable of administering much larger programs. But it has not demonstrated anything but a complete inability to manage any program within budget or to the level of efficiency one would reasonably expect from the private sector.

As such, while health care reform is warranted, the government is not the body to see to it. It is simply not up to the job. And until the government proves to me that it can handle the smaller programs, I cannot in good conscience pretend that it is competent enough to handle a take-over of 1/6 of the GDP of the United States.
