POWIP Piece of Work In Progress

14Sep/0964

Congratulations Mr. President on a job well done.

POWIP P11E

Many of our more contrarian commenters here at POWIP may be surprised by this post’s lede, as well as those who generally agree with my theses.  But as I have said since his election, Mr. Obama is our President, and I will support him when he’s right and oppose him when he’s not; I will be the personification of the term, “The Loyal Opposition.”

Well I’d like to take this moment to congratulate the President for making a decision to put the safety of our nation first, instead of internationalism.  Just as when he ordered the engagement of the Somali pirate kidnappers in April, Mr. Obama has again sent our special operations teams into action to protect our nation.  Earlier today the best of the best, our US Navy SEALs, successfully concluded operation Celestial Balance; an operation tasked to capture/kill Saleh Ali Nabhan.  Ten days ago President Obama signed off on the operation to take Nabhan, who was involved in many attacks on us and our allies since 1998 as well as residing on the FBI’s most wanted list since 2006.

This took stones on the part if the President, especially considering the pressure he’s under from the far left over Afghanistan and the War on Terror in general.  I tend to agree with Fouad Ajami that it is morally false and intellectually muddled to differentiate between Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as the rest of the WOT, as being “good” or “bad” wars; they are all part of stemming radical Islamic extremism, a clear and present danger to our nation.  And it’s pathetic how some on the left are blowing the retreat bugle just like they did in Iraq.  But perhaps worse are those on the right who supported the endeavor while Bush was POTUS, but now that Obama is Commander-in-Chief are suddenly squeamish.

Let me be crystal clear, I am behind Obama, Petraeus, and the entire command structure in Afghanistan, all the way down to each boot on the ground.  And to the President I say, while those on your own side, Pelosi et al, will resist your efforts to do what it takes to win the war, much like Bush joined with Democrats on some of his legislation, so too should you rely on the Republicans for support of your war needs and measures.  I agree wholeheartedly with Messrs. McCain, Graham, and Lieberman that, “Only decisive force can prevail in Afghanistan”.  Just as in Iraq, we need to go all the way to ensure victory and greater security for our nation.

So I’ll close by saluting my Navy brethren with a hearty, HOOYAH!, for a job well done, and the same to President Obama…

  12. Okay, the headlines are wrong, I think – if he was killed by AH-6 Little Birds strafing his vehicle, then the 160th SOAR (Special Operations Aviation Regiment) out of Ft. Campbell, KY should be getting the credit for the kill.

    • SSG Jeff,
The original Fox story detailed an MH-6 variant of the same family of helicopters. I don’t know if the story was corrected due to any updated info, or if it is just an error. Since they were SEALs and launched of Naval vessels I doubt that SOAR was involved. But I have been known to be wrong!

From the original story I saved the text of:

Two MH-6 Little Bird helicopters deployed from one of two U.S. Navy vessels near Somalia’s coast strafed a vehicle Nabhan was using to go back and forth between meetings. Intelligence operatives had been monitoring Sabhan prior to the attack. The helicopters passed once, firing on the vehicle, and then circled back around to retrieve the body so they could make a positive identification, according to one official.

I meant no slight to our gallant Army pilots with my reference, but was going on the original story as well as knowledge of Naval operations…

      Thanks for your comment

  14. This President confuses the sh*t outta me…. Domestically he’s a disaster but he actually seems to be doing more good than harm on the national security front…. of course I’m probably wistfully choosing not to remember some of his stupid decisions thus far but at least for the next 10 minutes I’ll have a smile on my face. Well Done Mr. President.

  16. SEALs are a bunch of overpaid, overhyped 19 yr olds who spend more time shaving their chests and oiling up for cool guy pics than they spend planning and training. The GWOT has been substantially harmed on numerous occasions by their fucked up amateur hour bullshit, and I am sick and fucking tired of the national cock-guzzling contest that this nation, and primarily the media, constantly engage in with these worthless fucks. It’s exactly this kind of gratuitous cheerleading, this faggot fanboy hero-worshipping (the “best of the best”, underlined no less, was a nice touch) that leads to the massively disproportionate budget allocations that see 19yo SEALs receiving $90k reenlistment bonuses while hyper-experienced mid-career NCOs from, let’s just say, other elements of the SOF community get thrown a commemorative pen and a box of crackerjacks.

That said, since you people don’t honestly no what the fuck you’re talking about, the people who conducted this op are squared the fuck away.

    Makes me fucking sick.

    • Patrick,
With all due respect, the SEALs that used to travel with the T.R. Battlegroup were always shit hot, squared away, snake eaters of the first degree…

I don’t know where you’re getting your animosity from friend, but I suggest that pay scales and bonuses are a subject better addressed by an admin. warfare specialist…

And that’s coming from a former aluminum cloud driver; ’nuff said…

  19. Some old general or another said that you win wars by making the bad guys die for their country. In this case, we do it by just making the bad guys die, because they seem to have no country to be proud of, no cause to fight for – only things to fight against.

I’d tone down the “congratulations, Mr President”, because while he may have given it the green light, the SEALs on the ground did the job; they were the guys in harm’s way (even though it did seem a bit of a duck-shoot).

Does anyboidy wonder why an operation like this needs the go-ahead from the Top? Why not just the Theater Commander?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    • That’s a good question ZZMike,
It may have more to do with the target’s location, Somalia, than the nature of the operation. I’m surprised that the press didn’t ask that question?

I’m sure if it were in Iraq, Afghanistan, or the badlands of North-West Pakistan the theater commander would have been able to authorize the action.

And as far as the Presidential congrats? Perhaps that was more a demonstration of support by a member of the loyal opposition; after all he could have chickened out!

And that would have been a revoltin’ development indeed…

  20. Saleh Ali Nabhan, another name on the pile, another terrorist who will never harm us again.
Republican or Democrat, mess with the U.S. and we’ll hunt you down. I’ll give credit where credit is due: that’s a lesson only a Democrat could teach the international community.
Obama gets it right — talk peace all you want, but wage war when you need. These are good times for American foreign policy.

  23. There are very few 19 year old SEALs in the field, if any. The two year training period would make it unlikely for a SEAL to deployed at that age.

Also, SEALs average about a year of college.

Overpaid? Some say you get what you pay for. Don’t know why the other services don’t pay as well. Perhaps the rest of the Navy isn’t as defensive about SpecOps as the rest of the Army is about SpecOps.

Not sure SEALs were involved in the operation, but “The Long War” website seems to think so.

Poor sad Patrick. I guess I better not tell him how many Rhodes Scholars wear the SEAL Trident. I suppose they just weren’t looking for a service that thought painting rocks white furthered the war effort.

Gimme that Rhodes Scholar count, please. I really want to know how many fuckin’ jugheads wearing inflatable swimmies gorged on a Marxist education at Oxford, which within tea-baggering circles would violate their oath to eternal illiteracy.

    Name ‘em.

    • There are no oaths to eternal illiteracy amongst the conservative right. But it seems that on the left there are many; to hyperbole, mendacity, expedieny, and Alinsky…

Have you ever spoken to any SEALs? Care to refer to them as jugheads wearing inflatable swimmies to one’s face? I’d recommend against it…

Now hear this, there are no idiots in SEAL teams.

      That is all!
