Interesting times and anticipation of great promise
We are living in an import time in our country. There are reputations to be made for some, while ruin will be suffered by others. Many have worked their whole lives to get a chance at making the crucial difference that separates victor and vanquished…
The fortunes of many are at stake. And, as always, the voices of loyal followers, some arguing with great righteousness the merits of their heroes, while instead others are satisfied merely by the diminution of their opponents…
And while millions are involved, hanging on the result of every episode as if it were a life and death struggle, in actuality only the elites themselves benefit. But, many rank and file people will sacrifice their time and money, convinced that by showing up, and making their voices heard, they too can have an influence on the all important process; albeit small and fleeting….
But it is a noble pursuit that can alternately provide the greatest of elation and fulfillment and just as easily deliver the most crushing depressions; accompanied by the usual vows of vengeful retribution. At times more partisan than any religious fervor, uniquely American, and the subject of almost continuous media coverage it begs only one overarching question waiting on the lips of millions;
Are you ready for some Football?
Ok, the official season starts next week, and I’m curious how everyone feels about “their†team. Please, dispense with pie-in-the-sky dreams of Super Bowl Cinderella stories for the Detroit Lions, or whatever. Let’s be intellectually honest, as we always are here at POWIP; but let’s devote this thread to some good ol’ head knocking, football talking, fun! Talk about teams, players, announcers, stadiums, the aerodynamics of the ball way the ball bounces; it’s all open season-so to speak…

I have viewed the Packers’ preseason with unalloyed delight. The only question is, can Rodgers stay healthy?

The Packers offense looks real good this year. But you’re right, it’s all on Rodgers. And the Ironman Brett Favre, who holds the record for consecutive games started I believe, is a hard act to follow in that respect.

Oh, Favre. He’s got the records for yards, touchdowns, interceptions. He doesn’t care; he wants them all.

Me? As with baseball, I have a favorite in both leagues. Fundamentally, I bleed burgundy and gold when scratched, the mark of a long term addiction to the Washingtin Redskins. But the last few years I lived in Washington I snapped up the opportunity to get Ravens season tickets also-an offer I couldn’t refuse…
It generally worked out well, one team being away when the other was in town; but on a rare weekend I could enjoy a sweet, sweet, NFL doubleheader! After moving to Long Island, I essentially gave my Redskin season tickets to a dear old friend who really appreciated it; and promised me exclsive rights to 2 games per of my choice! But we kept the Ravens tickets. They are a plucky team that has grown on me over the years. And they play old school football, running hard on offense and playing harsh defense; though they may be airing it out a bit more this year with Flacco behind center. And most importantly perhaps, my lovely wife-a life long New Yorker and a die hard Giants fan-can root for them in clear conscience; and Baby loves her some football!
Bottom line? Redskins will do very well, although the Giants will probably win the NFC east. Michael vick will make little difference in Philly…
And I’m lookin’ for Baltimore to win their division. Though, I’m not sure if they can go all the way to the dance without Rex Ryan callin’ the defense; and unfortunately he and some key players went to the Jets in the off season…

I live in New England, and am a Patirots fan (as is my wife). We’re eagerly anticipating this season with the return of Brady. He looked “ok” during pre-season – I think the hits he got (especially last week) will remind him that this ain’t beanbag, and will make him get really ready for the opener.
Teddy Bruschi has retired – that will be a real hurdle for the defense to overcome, especially mentally as he was a leader. But hopefully fresh talent can help…
I predict that they won’t do as well as 2 years ago (16-0) regular season, but better than last year (11-5 and not make the playoffs – how do you do THAT?). I say 13-3 – they lose one to the Dolphins (division opponent) and also to Colt and Saints (they often let their guard down on one should-win game each year – this year will be the Saints).
Of course, I’m not a pro at this, so this is just a WAG.

My fantasy team this week:
Romo, Tony QB DAL
Barber, Marion RB DAL
Peterson, Adrian RB MIN
Chambers, Chris WR SD
Evans, Lee WR BUF
Williams, Roy E. WR DAL
Boss, Kevin TE NYG WAS
Longwell, Ryan K MIN
Cowboys DST
Our league pays $2000 to the winner, and this year I think that money just might be mine. Tough love, my league’s homeys deserve a good beat down.

I’d have never figured you for a “fantasy” sports geek Mr. MFA edge…
I’m not, but many of my colleagues have been, so I understand basically how it works. And based on what I know you have a pretty good offense assembled there.
But, while he’ll do allright, I don’t think Romo will burn down the house at QB. But, that will be made up for by Barber and Peterson racking up a load of TD’s.
I’ll never understand how you’re allowed to have more than 11 guys in the offense set you choose, but that saidm you’ve chosen some excellent wide recievers as well as a tight end that will get utilized quite a bit in his teams system. And you’re kicker is a good choice…
If you still have the chance to tweak it, I’d probably go with either the Ravens or Giants defensive squads. Along with Pittsburg, as usual, I think those teams will be the top 3 defenses at the end of the season. Dallas’ will be more near the middle of the pack…
You may have a good shot at the 2 g’s though.

Dude, it’s fantasy, and in our league we start 1 QB, 2 RB’s, and 3 WR’s, etc…
Goddamn right I have smash mouth RB’s, I drew first pick in the 12-team draft and so Adrian Peterson was it. I have Romo, Carson Palmer and Flacco at QB. Peterson, Barber, Cedric Benson and Ricky Williams at RB. Therefore WR is my weakest skill position, b-hole.

Pickle pucker, kickers and D’s don’t win games for ya in FF. And the rare occasion they do you feel bad for the team you beat because that’s like catching a straight with the last card on the river. It’s all about RB’s, QB’s and WR’s, OK, just so you know. It’s they, de skeeeled pozichuns, who bang out the big points.
I can’t believe you don’t play FF, what are you a closet Goddamn sissy-ass Liberal Queer?

Naaahhh,
I just never got into it edge…But I did play a loooooong time ago in high school and red-shirted in college. I could have made the squad in college but, I actually had to, you know, study!; being in what was essentially a dual major program. But I ain’t whinin’, it’s an effect what’s cause can be directly attributed to the choices I made…
Besides, as big as I am, I wasn’t quite big enough to play my beloved D-lineman position in the NFL, if by some magic I could get there; they were already of Heroic proportions, and I was only 6-3, 265 at the time. It would have meant becoming a linebacker, and there was faaaar too much running involved in that for my tastes! And before you break out the snark, I was 6-3, 265, with a 38 inch waist and a 56 inch chest; so save your fat jokes to lay on the weight watchers crew shuffling out of their meetings…
But yeah, you have a great stable of running backs, and some decent QB’s in case any get hurt. Any other tight ends?
And as far as kickers and D’s not actually winning much in FF, well that right there proves it’s just fantasy. ‘Cuz everyone who knows real football, knows that come December, you gotta be able to run the rock, kick when necessary, and Crush! your apponents…
I mean, at the risk of being cliche, “Defense wins championships”!
Nice team, playah
