CDC Guesstimated Number of Swine Flu Cases, Refused CBS FOIA Request

President Barack Obama declared the swine flu outbreak a national emergency, giving his health chief the power to let hospitals move emergency rooms offsite to speed treatment and protect noninfected patients.

The declaration, signed Friday night and announced Saturday, comes with the disease more prevalent than ever in the U.S. and production delays undercutting the government's initial, optimistic estimates that as many as 120 million doses of the vaccine could be available by mid-October.

Health authorities say more than 1,000 people in the United States, including almost 100 children, have died from the flu, known as H1N1, and 46 states have widespread flu activity. So far only 11 million vaccine doses have gone out to health departments, doctor's offices and other providers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials.

Administration officials said the declaration was a pre-emptive move designed to make decisions easier when they need to be made. Officials said the move was not in response to any single development.

The government now hopes to have about 50 million doses of swine flu vaccine out by mid-November and 150 million in December. The flu virus has to be grown in chicken eggs, and the yield hasn't been as high as was initially hoped, officials have said.

"Many millions" of Americans have had swine flu so far, according to an estimate that CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden gave Friday. The government doesn't test everyone to confirm swine flu so it doesn't have an exact count. He also said there have been more than 20,000 hospitalizations.

Strangely, though, the CDC estimates that ManBirdPig cases have peaked and are on the decline:

According to the CDC, swine flu infections have already peaked, and the pandemic is on its way out. Peak infection time was the middle of October, where one in five U.S. children experienced the flu, says the CDC. Out of nearly 14,000 suspected flu cases tested during the week ending on October 10, 2009, 99.6% of those were influenza A, and the vast majority of those were confirmed as H1N1 swine flu infections. Even though the H1N1 pandemic appears to have peaked out, U.S. President Barack Obama has now declared a national emergency over swine flu infections. The reasoning behind such a declaration? According to the White House, it's designed to "allow hospitals to better handle the surge in patients" by allowing them to bypass certain federal laws.

Back in 2004, there were problems with flu vaccine rollout that John Kerry turned into a campaign indictment of the Bush Administration. Back then, the media was all over the shortage and the incompetence it exposed.

Once again, the vast majority of the vaccine will have been made available too late to have any significant impact on the spread of the disease. Whether it will have any impact on the public's perception of the government's competency to control health care is a matter of speculation, entirely, but it seems liable not to help. And that is perhaps why Obama determined that this is the moment in which it was most propitious to declare an emergency, so that when the epidemic ends he can recycle his rhetoric regarding jobs created or saved.

Whether the administration will use the declared state of emergency to stifle the babblings of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan remains to be seen. Likely the decision will be made by CDC poobah Eric Holder.

I heard pres O’Bamba’s declaration was one described as a “pre-emptive strike” against the flu.

I, for one, am not a fan of this president’s proclivity for adopting Booooooooosh’s strategeries – first in Afghanistan – now adopting the doctrine of pre-emption.

The flu has been slandered in its intentions. Profiling the virus in such a way will only radicalize it further.

What we need is for Bambi and his 70 Little Czars to engage the virus… buy it a latte – listen to 10000 maniacs. Once the virus hears the Enchanted One’s Voz, no doubt it will see the err of its ways. And if not, we will know the virus is racist in nature and therefore probably cooked up in some lab to kill Blacks.

Obama want to turn this into a full blown crisis, so that they can have another one to not let go to waste…

Besides, it dovetails soooooo nicely with the ongoing Obamacare debate. Nice how that works, eh?

But there may be an element of it that’s designed to “shout-down” Farrakhans risible looney-zooming, a la Wright, that H1N1 is engineered to disproportionately effect black folks…

People want to point fingers at “Birthers”, “Ghosters”, and “One World Governmenters”, but it doesn’t get any more looney-tunes than believing:
1) That a disease could even be created that effected blacks more than others (Hello! we’re all the same flavor of beings-HUMANS!!!)

2) Even if possible, why would the US government be at the root of it’s creation; especially when it’s effecting so many people of all colors overseas…

Of course, rank and file people expressing doubts on Obama’s mysterious and closely guarded past is front page news for weeks; but Farrakhan’s public pronouncement?

National Emergency? Tad bit of overkill. I’ve had two member of the (extended) family that were diagnosed. Second cousin (what? I’m close with ‘em) and my grandpa’s widow. My immune compromised father spent HOURS with aforementioned infected widow, and so far so good at a week and a half post-contamination.

When I read in a previous post that thor had given $500 to the site, instead of being jubilant, I thought, “Ah, shit.”

Dan, you’ve been involved in this much longer and at greater depth than I, but how do you maintain a sense of integrity on your site when the biggest asshole on the internet gives you money to keep blogging?

Don’t misunderstand me, please. I have always thought of you and Enoch as stand-up guys. Truly. I’m just troubled by this, and it could be that others of your readers are as well.

Cowboy – while it is true that tohr is an insufferable fool and seemingly bi-polar, I would suggest that banning him is not at all the way to go. It doesn’t seem very merciful, for one. Secondarily, it seems a bit like the POTUS (the Soros Administration, that is) attempting to margianalize FoxNews. While I would personally prefer more Carin, Happyfeet, Cowboy, and Serr8d comments and less tohr, as sad as it may be, the a**fu** that is das torh still, assuming he is a human being, possesses a sliver of dignity just for having been created.
