More Change! we can believe in?
The official body that controls the development of the internet, California based Icann, announced today that it was ending it's longstanding agreement with the US government; all part of a contract negotiation with the US Department of Commerce. Under the new arrangement Icann will enjoy a more international status, a vitual UN as it were, where other countries will have a more prominent role in both what activities occur online as well as the operating protocols. According to Icann's CEO the move is a measure to stem the development of parallel or alternate internets by companies that were suspicious of American control, and was hailed as a "power move" by overseas internet regulators.Â
I just hope that the government maintains some control over telecommunications traffic of all type entering or leaving the country, such as forcing traffic through one trunk line-so to speak; at least so the authorities can effectively combat serious cyberwarfare threats.  Because if the Pay-Per-Install malware business is so profitable theses days, imagine how much a real cyberterrorist can make per hour...

my personal preference would be if the webbertubes were “governed” by an organization that existed in a data haven, free of all governmental affiliations – if you haven’t read Cryptonomicon by N Stephenson, I would heartily recommend it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptonomicon

From the malware link:
So is this because the Russians are behind the malware, or is it that there is nothing worth stealing there, or both? I’m going with door #1 with the possibility of #3.

And this:
It has truly monstrous implications. What you see online is what the writer of the malware wants not what is actually being sent. Electronic soma, all is well, “these are not the bots you are looking for”, individualized mind control.

geoffb,
Some folks think the Russians are behind the malware, but I’ve also read that the Chinese are prime suspects too! And, far from having anything to steal, let’s just say that the Russians justice system, and their prisons, are probably much less coddling than our system is…
In other words, no club fed or FBI deal with the hackers. Oh they get them to work with security agencies already to help safeguard the country, but not by cajoling them; let’s just say that they make them an offer they can’t refuse!
