More on Kevin Jennings

Fox News reported that "Brewster" has come out to support the claim that he was 16, and therefore legally pursuing sex with men he met in bathrooms, at the time he had his now-famous chat with Kevin Jennings.

As far as I was concerned, the kerfuffle was over at the time that Jennings admitted maybe he ought to have handled things differently, and I have sympathy for what Eric says about his not having ratted the kid out (thanks to happyfeet for the link). As Chad Thompson points out in an email, there's no way to corroborate the story, as the then-young person in question has always been identified by a pseudonym, but I'm inclined to give them both the benefit of the doubt.

There are a couple of things that I'd like to say, though. Jennings taught at Concord Academy, where probably the bulk of the students were boarders, which means that he and other faculty and staff stood more in loco parentis than would be the case at most schools. More, he has benefitted personally and professionally by telling the story in one way to sympathetic audiences, and for him now to turn around when that telling has become inconvenient and to revise it puts his credibility into question. My guess is that he chose the name "Brewster" from the town in Massachusetts that was home to the student. Whether that matches up with this person, I don't know.

The story here, from my point of view, is how certain MSM outlets have chosen to report on various facts, or to suppress them. I will say, though, that it's a little odd that Obama should have chosen to dispatch Eric Holder and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan to Chicago in the wake of the murder of the honors student, while keeping the School Safety point man in DC. Is it because they fear offending the kind of homophobes who might beat a kid to death with a railroad tie splinter?

  1. I guess any conversation about Kevin Jennings has to go and link somehow back to Andrew Sullivan. Andrew Sullivan* finds God (or possibly Viagra):

I recall one marathon twelve-hour session of passion many years ago now. It was only afterwards that I realized I had barely had a single trace of an analytic thought for the longest period I could then remember. I was never happier. As I finally collapsed into my lover’s arms with the final orgasm that drained every last drop of desire or need from my body and soul, I understood for the first time why the French call coming “le petit mort”. It can be the emptying of self entirely. Which is why sex is so close at times to the presence of the divine, and reflects and incarnates God in ways few other things can so easily. We are more animal and more divine in sex than in any other activity.

*Warning: Some people have experienced nausea and vomiting after reading about Andrew Sullivan’s sex life.
