POWIP Piece of Work In Progress

In Case You Were Wondering . . .

yeah, we moved. OMFG, I hope it's many years before I have to do such a thing again.

Desks, tables, dressers, lamps, a piano, couches, beds, entertainment center, enormous bookshelves, thousands of books, CDs, videos, kitchenware and devices of various kinds, cushions, bedding, clothes, bicycles, skis, tools, tires, shovels, auto-related fluids, the grill, cleaning stuff, bathroom stuff, boxes of treasures created by the kids, pictures in and out of frames. The previous place was built into a steep hill, so you can imagine what getting a frigging piano up there was like.

I got the new place painted before we moved, installed a new toilet at the old place (one of Brendan's friends dropped her cell phone in the head), got the bookshelves reinstalled in the new place. In short, I feel as though I were beaten all over my body with a rubber mallet. Many thanks to those several people who helped with the moving and the cleaning, especially Lauren and Terry, and to Butch Cartularo for the use of his truck.

I was in so much discomfort two nights ago that I couldn't sleep properly. I swear to God, if I have to do this again, I'm making a huge bonfire of stuff and starting from scratch. Anyway, thanks for your patience.

  1. Good to hear you are settled. I can certainly empathize. We recently moved and will again within the next year…just…exhausting to contemplate.

  2. Sorry to hear the move was so difficult. Glad you’re through it and can be about the business of re-settling now.

  3. Long live friends with trucks! And any friend in general who helps you move should be written into your will. Welcome back to some semblance of reality, Dan.

  4. Sounds like you could have used a good massage therapist after all that… :P

I absolutely hate moving. So you have my sympathy and congratulations on a new place.

  5. “A friend will help you move. A good friend will help you move a body.” Been waiting for a chance to use that line….

My wife and I, when we were first married, moved once a year for 5 years (a combination of reasons, not including law avoidance). It is a great way to keep from acquiring junk. We then stayed in the same place for 7 years. It was a freaking nightmare to move after that – thank goodness it was a job relo, and the employer paid moving expenses. Even with professional movers, there were 2 truckfuls (think Beverly Hillbilly type truckfuls) of stuff to move – things the movers wouldn’t touch. Raw materials such as lumber, plants, guns, snow tires, etc. And we moved into a place with LOTS of stairs.

Be glad it is done, Dan. Rest up – I’m sure the elections today will give you lots of material to blog about soon.

  6. Navy Wife for 22 years. Began life as a child of nomads, who moved almost every summer…I was so thrilled to find out the Navy would “move us” I nearly cried. Now, I’ve been back in our house since 2003, retired from Navy Wife status since 2006, & kinda feel…an almost overwhelming urge to GO somewhere for awhile. Painted my kitchen cabinets in May to assuage my wanderlust then…and reading the plight of others who must move – and the other grandparents just relocated due to house fire – has tamped it down a bit for now.

    But it’ll be back…

  7. I’ve moved a bit over the last 25 years; mostly to places along the east coast. It made me travel light-so to speak. But then again y’all are blessed with children, and we are not; it makes a big difference in the volume I’m sure.

I always said it stinks regardless of the distance.

    Enjoy your new digs!

  8. I say we send Dan some house warming gifts.

Sounds like he could use a new rubber mallet.
