That is really cool looking. I like the fact that in the article there are sections called “whipped cream”, where the formula still hasn’t had the desired effect.
And when I first read the title of this post, I thought is was a combination of Mandelbrot and Mesquite – the hard desert wood, and that the picture was some odd piece that had been carved.
Which, you could do, if you could take that model they talked about in the linked article, and feed it into a numerically controlled laser. Would make some awesome Christmas gifts!

Looks like some things I’ve crocheted [I'm not too good at it]
In other news, George Hart [I know him from Mathcamp] shows the best way to slice a bagel:

Great images. Years ago I remember playing with a program called fractint for hours on end (you can still find it on google) creating fractals and oohing and ahhing over the 2d images. They took forever back in the day.
Then, I bought a program that would generate 3d fractal landscapes to play with. It converted generated Mandelbrot (and other fractal formulas) into stunning (at the time) landscapes with trees, lakes, rivers, the works. I wish I could remember the name of it. And yes, it came on 4 or 5 3 1/2 inch FDDs.
… maybe I left it at Methcamp …
