  1. In labor with my 5th child. Some guy comes in and does an “exam.” Nurse had already confirmed I was completely dilated (I gave birth w/in 10 min of arriving at the hospital), and they were trying to convince me to wait until MY doc arrived. Anyway, I gave him about 5 second before I started yelling at him to get his hand OUT OF THERE.

He did and left the room. Never saw him again.

Afterward, I figured he was an intern hoping to get a bit more experience. And, I still think it was a student who screwed up my kidney donation surgery (they ripped my renal artery and had to be completely opened up immediately turning a 4 hr surgery into a 9 hour dealo). I was introduced to a billion youngish looking docs beforehand.

  3. No, I think the point is that these folks are USING you as a lab project on their path of learning. Pelvic exams are merely something that folks prolly object to more than other things.

A student wants to check my heart rate? Go ahead. Knock yourself out.

When he wants to stick his hand up my hooohaaa? Now we’ve got an issue.

  4. And the big thing is consent. When I was in hospital, had interns come by with attending MD, she asked me if it was okay, that it was for teaching purposes — I had no problem.

Not getting consent is asking for a whole bunch of legal troubles, at least in U.S. Don’t know about other countries.
