Random Cool Stuff

Classical Roman multi-tool.

World's most powerful laser to trigger fusion reaction later this year.

What could possibly go wrong? Still, love to take that ride.

  1. And I thought my Gerber multi-tool was a piece of fine engineering – that Roman one is cool. And made of silver!

As for that laser article, can someone explain this reported contradiction to me:
Stars are driven by nuclear fusion, …

Self-sustaining fusion requires conditions more extreme than at the centre of the Sun,…

Um, the Sun is a star, so it exists because of fusion, but fusion requires more than what is in a star to work, so how does the Sun work, then? And this mistake is telling: “Stars are driven by nuclear fusion, as is the immense destructive power of the hydrogen bomb.“. Most of the yield of a hydrogen bomb is derived from the fission that takes place, although the fusion is an integral part of the weapon (the second stage, in fact). But fission is the first and final stage. Reporters who failed science class really shouldn’t report on science matters.

Dan, the problem with riding in ballons is they pop. Plain and simple.

  2. Ok, the 3rd link; Giant Hydrogen airships?

Really? Why not a big boat up near some iceberg that we claim can never possibly sink? Perhaps some wings made from using wax to stick feathers to a frame, fly as high as you can kid…

Since we’ve clearly devolved as a society to the point where we’re too stupid to learn from one example, call the damn thing the Hindenburg. Maybe if it blows up under the same name again people will learn what happens to a big balloon full of hydrogen.

“packing 330,000 cubic metres of hydrogen gas and capable of lifting 396 tonnes” Once you light that puppy it’ll lift a damn sight more tonnage than that… oh, you meant unexploded, sorry.
