Some Hope Afterall?
I thought I'd share some good news my 10 year old daughter inadvertently gave me last night when I got home. She had told me over the weekend that she was going to have a field trip in October, and last night I got some more details. It turns out she's going to a place called "Ameritowne" in Denver. It's an educational program designed "to help teach students about business, economics and free enterprise in a fun and hands-on way." The program culminates with the hands on excercise where the students operate a 17 business community. One of my chief complaints about education in our country is the woeful lack of economics teaching. Frankly I think this is the chief reason people don't understand one of the most basic principals of conservative economic theory, that higher taxes stunt economic growth. I'll be going on this trip (boss permitting) with her and look forward to seeing how this organization is teaching what really amounts to Econ 101.

Awesome.
When I was in high school there was an FBLA club (future business leaders of america) and actually a had a teacher dedicated to teaching basic business, econ classes. The students ran a store/concession stand during breaks, which raised funds for the club, which they used for field trips like this.
Have fun. You must be doing something right for your daughter to be interested in something like that at her age.

They (Ameritowne) will, if on the level, have to walk a fairly fine line.
No realistic simulation of business can be without acknowledging the role of taxes and regulation, but if they approach reality (Hi! You made a profit! That makes you a vile eeevul rich capITalist, so we’re taking it all away to punish you!) it might, errrrr, dampen their enthusiasm.
If they aren’t on the level, and just whip out the manifesto and start preaching, it’s easier, of course. That’s the way to bet, nowadays.
Regards,
Ric

Some lessons are best left for the parents to teach.

We should not be recommending private enterprise to our children. It is an empty promise. We should be encouraging all of them to go to work for a government “concern”. There is little future in the private sector. Sorry – but true.
Had I known then what I know now, I would most certainly accepted Norwich’s invitation to attend. and blown off that f’n lib arts college in IA.
Live and learn. Feeeed at the trough, my good fellows!

I believe economics should be taught in grade school.
Here is an example of an economics professor teaching a kindergartener. Now granted this is an especially dull student, but even he gets a spark from the teaching method of this professor. Take a look.
