It’s Like They Aren’t Even Trying
In what is increasingly looking like a last ditch effort man the torpedoes and damn the consequences in the face of a pending electoral nightmare, the Democrats (in the form of Blago lottery winner Roland Burris) are adding an amendment to the Defense Authorization bill set for a vote. The amendment would end a "longstanding ban" (since the mid 90s) on abortions at overseas military hospitals. The current ban has exceptions for cases of rape, incest, or danger to the life of the mother; meaning the proposal would effectively apply only to birth control abortions.
Senator Nelson (D-NE) states that he opposes the "elective abortions on publicly funded facilities," but does anyone doubt where he'll vote when the time comes? Which do you think he'd rather avoid if given the choice; prevent the repeal of DADT or let the feds pay for a few abortions?
Supporters claim that the patients would be paying the costs of the procedure. GOP opponents note, correctly, that the facitilities and salaries are publicly subsidized. This demonstrates, once again, tha t Democrats are either clueless about the effects of overhead costs or are purposefully obtuse on the issue. I'm not sure which, nor am I sure which is worse.
With Amnesty alone, they could have used the vote politically (although not very effectively). With DADT alone, they could have used it politically (possibly with some effect). All three combined, though, provide perfect cover for any Republican to vote against it regardless of his local constituency.
