This weekend’s other Israel/U.S. story

Seems to have been pushed off of the radar by the skirmish on the blockade runner's vessel; a subject that Dan posted on earlier.  But here was another story about our nation, it's most longtime and staunch ally in the region-Israel, and a UN security council resolution vote.  And it's not a happy tale:

Washington's unprecedented backing for a UN resolution for a nuclear-free Middle East that singles out Israel has both angered and deeply worried the Jewish state although officials are cagey about openly criticising their biggest ally.

The resolution adopted by the United Nations on Friday calls on Israel to join the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and urges it to open its facilities to inspection.

The document, which singles out Israel but makes no mention of Iran's controversial nuclear programme, drew a furious reaction from the Jewish state who decried it as "deeply flawed and hypocritical."

But it was US backing for the resolution which has caused the most consternation among Israeli officials and commentators, who interpreted the move as "a resounding slap around the face" which has dealt a very public blow to Israel's long-accepted policy of nuclear ambiguity.

Publicly, the Israel government has not criticised the US position but privately, officials expressed deep disappointment over the resolution, which Washington backed despite intensive Israeli efforts to block it.

Really, this is not as shocking a reversal as it may seem at first blush, at least from an Obama administration policy point of view; but that does not mean that it is justifiable, legitimate, or even a rational act.  To begin with, the President has squandered our own strategic initiative with regard to ambiguity when he essentially published a spread sheet with all of the intimate details of our own nuclear arsenal recently.  So one can see where he could easily believe that it was an unnecessary artifice of a warrior culture to maintain such an initiative; and decide that it was in Israel's best interests as well as those of his own Middle-East peace initiative to abandon such a knuckle-dragging,  out-of-date, concept.

And, as for the fact that the UN resolution fails to mention Iran by name or inference?  Meh.  We all know of Obama, and indeed the entire far left's, penchant for incongruent oral equivalents.  Ones whereby Arizona's recent immigration becomes the equivalent of slavery.  Or, where the strategic arsenal of a nation outnumbered and surrounded by potential adversaries, both the nations themselves and the unregulated paramilitary militias acting with impunity from within those same states, is the equivalent of one soon to be held by one that has proven itself to be a rogue player over the years, has a track record of passing military weapons to their proxies to use on Israelis, and has stated clearly the intent nuke Israel out of existence as soon as it is within their capability.

It's poppycock. Just like the notion that the passengers on board the one ship out of 6 that chose to try and run the Israeli blockade of Gaza were "peace activists".  Those "peace activists" were armed with clubs and knives, and it's pretty clear that they were far less interested in aid for Gazans than in, like, using the opportunity as a pretext to cast Israel in the worst possible light among those who don't know better.  But, you know, never let a good crisis go to waste is a tactic known by many professional agitators, eh?  What is fascinating is that the O!ministration has got Israel's back on the boarding of the blockade runner, while at the same time they are against them on their right to do what it maintain their strategic defense.  Seems dissonant?  Not really.

You see, with the midterms coming up and the whole Amnesty play in flux, the President and the Democrats can't count on 95%+ of Hispanics to support them like another minority group did during the last election.  So, surely with an ill and begrudging intent, they must do something to shore up the polling among the usually loyal voting block of American Jews.  I guess they think that backing the commando raid will help negate all of the other actions of late.  It's a classic case of Barack giveth, and Barack taketh away.

At least until the electoral calculus changes.  Then we all know where the entire nation of Israel is going...
