Barkin’ in the Boys Room

My nephew Grayson is 5 years old, as he is very proud to tell you. I'd post a pic but my sister in law saw a story about this woman who found a picture of her daughter that had been on her blog, posted on a kiddie porn site, so we don't put pics of the kids on the interwebs anymore. Just trust me when I tell you, he's a beautiful boy and will be a heartbreaker in a few years.

Grayson was in pre-K last year and started kindergarten this year and has had some, um, behavior problems. Teh Brother and his wife had discovered you have to be very specific with Grayson...you can't just tell him to be good. You have to say...don't bite..don't hit....if the teacher says don't stand on the desk....don't stand on the desk....you get the point. So teh Brother and his wife went over everything they could think of with Grayson this year ....since he was SENT HOME FROM PRE-K a total of 9 times last year for a variety of things....not the least of which was hitting a little boy in the lunch room for...to quote Grayson "getting in my face, I told him not to..but he wouldn't get outta my face."

Turns out...they didn't think of everything, because Grayson, who to his credit has been trying very hard this year to be good, got a time out yesterday and lost his green smiley face....for barking in the bathroom. He can't tell you why he was doing that, except it was fun and he can't tell you why, when the teacher asked him to stop, he chose not to except it was fun.

So I guess the moral of this story is......the one possibility that you don't think of is the one you will be dealing with.

Some Hope Afterall?

I thought I'd share some good news my 10 year old daughter inadvertently gave me last night when I got home.  She had told me over the weekend that she was going to have a field trip in October, and last night I got some more details.  It turns out she's going to a place called "Ameritowne" in Denver.  It's an educational program designed "to help teach students about business, economics and free enterprise in a fun and hands-on way."  The program culminates with the hands on excercise where the students operate a 17 business community.  One of my chief complaints about education in our country is the woeful lack of economics teaching.  Frankly I think this is the chief reason people don't understand one of the most basic principals of conservative economic theory, that higher taxes stunt economic growth.  I'll be going on this trip (boss permitting) with her and look forward to seeing how this organization is teaching what really amounts to Econ 101.
