Today’s helping of Chris Christie awesomeness
Comes from a gathering of conservative activists in Iowa where the Governor spoke yesterday.
Now, this is some red-meat, inside baseball kind of stuff, but I thought it needed to be out there for a couple of reasons. The first is to combat disturbing naysaying of the Governor's conservative bona-fides that arose during the internecine squabbling following the conclusion of the Republican primaries. During that purity inquisition, when so many long-time, loyal, members of the conservative coalition were declared to be RINO ESTABLISHMENT RETHUG! STOOGES/SHILLS!11!1!, many times by folks that hadn't bothered to get up off the couch and get involved since, oh, say, EVAR!, one of those suddenly called into question was Christie; because he had the audacity to, you know, endorse Mike Castle in the Delaware primary race-QUELLE HORREUR !
But I reject that knee jerk reaction from the johnny come latelies. To wit:
Christie said Republicans must deliver on their conservative promises if they gain power during the November elections. If they don't follow through, he said voters will send the GOP "to the wilderness, and they are going to send us there for a long, long time."
"As a party, it is put up or shut up time," he said.
"We lost our way a number of years ago, and we became tax and spend light," he said. "Less spending, smaller government, less regulation, smaller government — we're going to be all about that again. We have to step up and stand for those principles again."
He described former President Ronald Reagan as the last truly successful Republican political leader, because he stuck to those basic core principles "and that's what we need to be about today."
Christie is among those who argue that Republicans can succeed when they focus on fiscal conservatism, often at the expense of focusing on key social issues, whereas former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee energize the party's religious and socially conservative base.
[emphasis-ed.]
I mean, I expect the true conservatives to come out any moment and explain to me why statements like these verify that Christie's a candy-assed, establishment tool, RINO. Or, in fairness, maybe all those heretofore uninvolved true conservatives are waiting for Glenn Beck to voice affirmation for Christie, so that he may be removed from the list of equivalently bad establishment politicians from the equivalently corrupt political parties. But my axe-grinding over Beck's(who I generally agree with in principle) sloppy logic is taking me too far off topic; I'll reserve that one for another post.
My point here is that despite his endorsement of Castle, or what he may have said about compromise and comity when campaigning for Meg Whitman, it sounds to me like Christie's conservative cred is pretty authentic. In my humble opinion, no one needs to worry about his staunchness .
And my other point concerns the speculation the he's pullin' an Obama, and just marking time until he can run for the next highest office. He addressed that in Iowa:
After his speech, Christie insisted he wasn't planning to run for president in 2012 — even though Iowa, home to the nation's first presidential caucus, is a key destination for those with big political aspirations.
"I'm governor of New Jersey, I'm not going to run for national office," Christie told reporters. "You have to want it more than anything else in the world, and I don't. ... You have to be ready for it, and I'm not."
Me? I believe him. He has been a man of his word so far, and my intuition is that he won't be changing his stripes anytime soon.
Where do you come down on this. I Chris Christie the real thing, or should he be booked as the keynote speaker at the next RINO-con? As always, we here at POWIP are interested in the considered opinions of our kind readers.
A Peek Inside a Muddled Mind.
Since Mr. Collins does not restrict us in what we can write about I thought I'd tell you a little about me and the things I'm interested in. These are the things (other than politics which, quite frankly, the day to day of is getting on my last nerve and yanking it til it bleeds.) that you're likely to read about if you read me.
I'm into history...American History mostly...but also Military History..so there will be some of that. My favorite few minutes in American History come from this I believe those 14 paragraphs ARE America. So..there's that.
I'm also into books. I read nonfiction like The Politically Incorrect Guides and The Making of America and A Patriot's History of the United States among many many many others. Most having to do with history or politics.
Okay...so get your mocking hats on because I also loved these books and these books.
My favorite fiction series is the Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon. Girl can tell a story. I also enjoy political thrillers, mysteries, and alternative history fiction..the best of which is this man
I am also a TV addict and a fangirl, holdovers from my teenage years that sometimes require intervention and intense meetings. Currently I love these shows: Warehouse 13, Burn Notice, Haven, White Collar among many many many others that we will get to as the fall lineup gets going.
I fangirl the following people (some of them I know their politics and some I don't..I just assume if you're in the entertainment bidness you're a lefty unless you say otherwise, so please no OMG he's a LIBERAL!! Because I don't fangirl them because of their politics and for some of them..it's not even for their talent. ;) ) Eric Balfour, Kevn McKidd, Johnny Depp, Bruce Campbell, Adrian Paul,Peter Wingfield, Rachel Weisz, Angie Harmon just to name a teeny tiny few.
So, there is absolutely no telling what I might decide to write about up to and including how ugly most of these are. And about stuff from my life..some of it fall down in the floor funny, like the story about my dad and the Great Mailbox Massacre, and some of it not so funny like my giving up my daughter for adoption or my being raped.
So, I hope I haven't freaked you out or got you thinking I need therapy ...well I actually might..but that's really none of your business.
See ya in the funny papers!!!
My Fair Lady, Ms. Bachmann
In a radio interview yesterday, Michelle Bachman was debating none other than the old turncoat Arlen Specter. As it turns out, while Ms. Bachmann was verbally eating him for lunch (it's amazing how powerful true convictions are) the best retort Arlen could muster was "I'm going to treat you like a lady, now act like one." And do what, shut the hell up? Seriously, Arlen, I mean I know you're like 100 or something but this isn't the 1800's anymore. Do you REALLY want to go there? I guess so seeing how he has tried to belittle another strong woman before. So, if that's the case, what I would LOVE to know is this, what IS Arlen's definition of a lady? Oh wait, I know the answer, she is obviously someone of magnificent character, reserved and vulnerable, like, you know, Olympia Snowe, or even Michelle Obama. Maybe she is a lady full of grace both inwardly and outwardly as demonstrated time and again by the Queen of Botox, Nancy Pelosi. I know none of them would dare put Arlen in his place or god forbid, speak when they shouldn't.
Now, of course, I fully expect our feminist friends in the MSM to rise up in disgust at the unbelievably decrepit and sexist comments uttered by the senator...yeah right. I'm sure they will just flippantly shrug it off as a senior moment, a simple slip of the tongue. Good thing he's not a Republican, like George Allen, or his career would be over faster than you could put "lipstick on a pig."
When Sarah talks, CLSA listens
Sarah Palin addressed an audience at the CLSA Asia Pacific Markets Conference today. Although the forum was not officially filmed, and closed to the media, reports of the happening in the Wall Street Journal and Breitbart are starting to emerge; along with some of Sarah's choice words:
Lack of government wasn’t the problem. Government policies were the problem. The marketplace didn’t fail. It became exactly as common sense would expect it to. The government ordered the loosening of lending standards. The Federal Reserve kept interest rates low. The government forced lending institutions to give loans to people who, as I say, couldn’t afford them. Speculators spotted new investment vehicles, jumped on board and rating agencies underestimated risks…
Ah, that lovely Palin common sense. An interesting juxtaposition to Obama's apologies and ideological surrender, eh? Read both of the linked pieces, especially the Wall Street Journal link. And for more on this see ACE's take, and Allah Pundit; both AllahP and Breitbart have video to boot!
UPDATE: The Wall Street Journal has another full story on her speech. And from a NY Times piece:
Mr. Goodé, a New Yorker who said he would never vote for Mrs. Palin, said she acquitted herself well. “They really prepared her well,†he said. “She was articulate and she held her own. I give her credit. They’ve tried to categorize her as not being bright. She’s bright.â€
Just.Wow...
