Smart Power! yielding shout-outs from around the globe!
left to, well, left! Oba-Mao T-Shirt, Uncle Fidel, Burning Obama
While there are those who are not so enchanted with the direction of US foreign policy right now, they are mostly are allies; so why worry! Especially when such luminary, enlightened, and progressive leaders such as Uncle Fidel are proclaiming there heartfelt approval with President Obama:
Fidel Castro appears to have a fascination with the American leader that would make Obama Girl jealous, writing obsessively not only about his politics, but of his youth and vigor.
Since handing over the Cuban presidency to his brother in February 2008, the 83-year-old has continued to publish his thoughts in essays called "Reflections of Comrade Fidel," which are dutifully printed in state media and read repeatedly on government-controlled radio and television.
But in less than a year of near-constant commentary, Castro has called Obama intelligent, sincere, serene, courageous, honest and well-meaning. He praised his work ethic, pondered the historical nature of his barrier-shattering election and fretted that he might face assassination.
And, while Chavez could not be reached for comment, It's unlikely that he would dispute the assessment of his mentor in Cuba.
But that's not the only place where Mr. Obama is a celebrity these days. It seems that the Chinese are welcoming him like a world cultural Icon!, and less like, you know, the U.S. President:
Strangest is the burning Obama, tucked away in a Beijing warehouse. Artist Liu Bolin hopes Obama can take time from his visit to drop by.
"He's so hot right now, so I wanted to translate that through my work," said Liu, who was inspired by the idea of the first black U.S. president.
The bronze Obama bust is modeled on Time magazine's "Man of the Year" cover and is speckled with holes for gas that ignites every couple of minutes.
"Yes, setting something on fire can have negative connotations, but this piece represents energy and life that Obama has given to the world," said the 38-year-old, who made a similar piece for former revolutionary leader Mao Zedong.
One Beijing shop owner wanted to see what Obama could do for sales. Liu Mingjie created "Oba Mao" T-shirts, with the president wearing the uniform of the Red Guards, who caused chaos during the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s.
Gee...I don't remember them doing stuff like this for Nixon. The Dalai Lama was unavailable for comment...
Now, you can't make this stuff up. Obama equated with Mao? I'm sure Anita Dunn will be ecstatic! She can add him to her list of the worlds greatest philosophers. And gettin' a shout out from Fidel? Who's next, the Russians and Iranians? Too bad our European allies, the Israelis, the Indians, or General McChrystal aren't as enthusiastic. It may have something to do with the red-headed-stepchild treatment they've been getting lately...
Odd isn't it, that all of our traditional democratic allies can't identify with Obama as much as full-on communists. But, it must be a good feeling to the "first citizen of the world" to be getting all of this attention. I mean, he can't help but like being told. "You numbah one in da globe, G!" Especially in view of his falling poll numbers here at home.
Calamity in Honduras; Obama bus backs over Zelaya…
So here's another, and perhaps the final, chapter in the Obama-drama in Honduras. After essentially demanding that there be some kind of avenue by which Zelaya could be returned to power, contingent on a determination by the same governmental bodies that legally removed him from office over the summer, the State Department has signaled that it really might not matter if that occurs, and that the US will unconditionally recognize the, previously declared unrecognizable, Honduran elections scheduled for the end of this month.
The U.S. has repeatedly pressed for Zelaya's reinstatement. President Barack Obama was explicit in a speech this summer: "America supports now the restoration of the democratically elected President of Honduras."
In Washington, State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said Wednesday that the United States considers what happened in Honduras a coup and that Zelaya should be reinstated, but he said the focus now should be on implementing last week's deal between the ousted president's representatives and the interim government of Roberto Micheletti.
Hold on with all of that "coup" talk Ian. Maybe that's what you and President Obama think, but the Congressional Research Service took a much different point of view in Spetember, finding that Zelaya was removed legally, in accordance with the Honduran Constitution. And anyway, your pronouncement has been superceded by someone above your pay grade.
Ousted President Manuel Zelaya is asking the Obama Administration why, after pressing for his reinstatement, it now says it will recognize upcoming Honduran elections even if he isn't returned to power first.
In a letter sent to the U.S. State Department on Wednesday, Zelaya asked Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton "to clarify to the Honduran people if the position condemning the coup d'etat has been changed or modified."
His request came after Washington's top envoy to Latin America, Thomas Shannon, told CNN en Espanol that Washington will recognize the Nov. 29 elections even if the Honduran Congress decides against returning Zelaya to power.
Clearly Zelaya hears the back-up alarm on the Obama bus beeping; my advice would be to move out of the way since far more intimate "allies" have ended up under that bus since Mr. Obama came on to the national scene.  This whole embarrassing sequence of events has proven to underscore just how amateurish the administrations idea of SMART POWER! is in actuality. And not only that, but it reveals all of the highminded talk about "not meddling in the affairs of other nations" to be hollow blather-"Just Words!"; and, a convenient excuse to vote "present" during the Iranian post election uprisings instead of strongly supporting freedom as Reagan did vis-a-vis Poland in the 1980's.
Thank goodness, in the end, the US is standing behind the free choice of the Honduran people. And Mr. Zelaya, enjoy your new office, along with the rest of the people that suddenly were "no longer the [insert name here] that I knew", under that bus!

Zelaya not automatically to be re-seated as President in Honduras.
Last summer's action in Honduras, and some of the shameful acts by our own State Department and the Obama administration has been an on-going topic here at POWIP; most recently with Dan recounting the latest reports that Zelaya would be re-seated as President.  But as Otto Reich observes at "The Corner" that may be an oversimplification of the upcoming process:
Contrary to press reports, Zelaya is not in any way automatically returned to office by the accord. Â First, there must be a vote by the entire Honduran congress on whether Zelaya is fit to return to office. Â Prior to that, the Honduran supreme court, which ruled against Zelaya in June by a vote of 15 to 0, must issue an opinion on the same.
He also points out that this very same arrangement could have been agreed to months ago except for the ideologues at the NSC and the White House's increasingly apparent inability to admit when they make a mistake. Reich also relates concerns that Chavez will get involved trying to buy support for Zelaya in an effort to get him reseated; and in doing so be able to intimidate his [Chavez's] opponents as well as claim a victory of sorts. Kind of like the President is hoping he'll be able to do with the Obamacare bill.
It's funny, isn't it, that the President and Chavez would use similar tactics? Funny strange, not funny ha-ha. I guess it's that vaunted Smart Power! we heard so much about.
Steyn on Jarrett speaking trooooooooof! to pow-ah…
The appointment of a new "Blame Czar" and other amusing miscellany. But he makes some fairly good points:
Ah, right. People “putting up signs.†Can’t have that, can we? The most powerful woman in the inner circle of the most powerful man on earth has decided to speak truth to powerful people standing in the street with handwritten placards saying “THIS GRAN’MA ISN’T SHOVEL READY.†Was it only a week ago that I wrote about this administration’s peculiar need for domestic enemies?
The Senior Advisor seems to have forgotten that she is the power. Admittedly, this is a recurring lapse on the part of the administration. There was Barack Obama only the other day blaming everything on the president — no, no, silly, not him, the other fellow, the Designated Fall Guy who stepped down as head of state in January to accept the new constitutional position of Blame Czar. Musing on problems in Afghanistan, Obama blamed the “long years of drift†under his predecessor. The new president — okay, newish president — has been Drifter-in-Chief for almost a year but he’s too busy speaking truth to the former power to get on top of the situation. It could be a while yet. In his more self-regarding moments, such as his speech to the U.N., he gives the strong impression that the “long years of drift†began in 1776.
It seems that Ms. Jarrett has forgotten just which side of the power relationship she and Obama are on; just who are the mau-mau-ers, and who the mau-mau-ees. I mean, it's kind of hard to decry the inherent villainy of The Man ! when you are the man. On the bright side though, Obama need not worry about the usual suspects accusing him of racism...
And Steyn has a particularly amusing post at "The Corner" where he contrasts the genuine pleasure that Indian Prime Misinster Singh enjoyed during his recent meetings with former President G.W. Bush, with the stunned Pakistanis following Hillary's recent scoldings; Smart Diplomacy Watch indeed. As he snarks:
Good thing those arrogant swaggering Texas cowboys aren't blundering around the world screwing up America's global relationships anymore.
Both posts are pretty good, which is usual for Mr. Steyn, take a moment, read them both, and get a few laughs from stuff that otherwise might make you want to cry.
Smart Power! results may not be the same as implied or expected
During the 2008campaign, Obama promised to meet with the leaders of Iran and North Korea, "without preconditions". And while much has been made about that promise, it seems that he forgot to tell the American people that he would also be happy to meet with them without expecting any real results either ! I guess the moving goalpost disclaimer was in the fine print...
According to Tony Romm at "The Hill":
President Barack Obama first issued the tough two-week deadline in a speech following Thursday's meetings between Iran and the P5+1, a coalition of British, Chinese, French, German, Russian and U.S. officials. At the time, Obama reiterated the U.S. approach to Iran's nuclear program would be tough — especially so, he added, if Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad failed to provide nuclear inspectors "unfettered access" to its uranium facilities.
...
But Kelly on Friday seemed to downplay any diplomatic expectations. He stressed during his briefing that the Obama administration would not commit to a response or punishment, much less a deadline, until it could coordinate with the International Atomic Energy Association (IAEA)."I don't know that it's written in stone, necessarily," Kelly repeated about the deadline. "But I think we'll find out more details when — after [IAEA head Mohamed] ElBaradei's trip."
[emphasis-ed.]
That would be the same Mohammed El-Baradei that, you know, conveniently left out of the IAEA reports the part concerning Iran's work on nuclear weapons; the same El-Baradei that considers himself a world peacemaker that's doing God's work! This is the guy the administration is going to rely on to "coordinate the details" of the Qum inspection schedule and regimen? This is the kind of Smart Power ! that's guiding our nation's most urgent and sensitive foreign policy actions; yet another example of the President's Brilliance! and Judgement! perhaps?
It's been observed by some of his opponents that all of Obama's promises have an expiration date, but a few months ago nobody would have believed that the time period would become this short! And I guess it's safe to say that his proclamation that, "a nuclear Iran is unacceptable", has expired too; after all, they're just words ...
Smart Power! on Honduras. Obama; it’s a coup! CRS; not so much…
In recent days, the situation in Honduras has entered a new and in some ways more bizarre phase. Unfortunately, for Zelaya’s leftist supporters, it hasn’t been going exactly as they expected. It seems that the largest throng that man who had visions of Chavez like power can draw to his stronghold in the Brazilian embassy is around 85 people; and that’s with the UN catering the demonstration ! I wonder if Chavez is embarrassed by his role in this entire fiasco, both in assisting Zelaya in his failed attempt to stage a phony, and illegal, plebiscite that would be used to support his unconstitutional bid for another Presidential term as well as helping to sneak him back into the country.Â
What should be embarrassing to the US Department of State and the Obama administration is the shameful way they have openly intervened in the Honduran situation, as well as convincing other nations to join in the misguided sanctioning of the Central American nation. In fact on September 3  the administration formally cut off all aid to our ally, regardless of the lack of consensus as to whether a coup actually took place or not.
Well, the matter has been settled by the Congressional Research Service, the same body that discovered that Obamacare didn’t preclude illegal immigrants from participating in the public system, when they declared today that Zelaya’s removal from office by the authority of Honduras’ Parliament and Supreme Court was completely legal. And although unorthodox, as Honduras Constitution has no provision for impeachment, the arrest does not constitute an illegal coup. However, that said, his forced deportation by the military does appear to be against the law and is currently under investigation by Honduran authorities.
Well, that might just leave a mark. And it seems that all of the meddling, by an administration that made the point ad nauseum of their reluctance to meddle in the affairs of other nations, was based upon the flawed premise of a coup that never took place! Maybe Obama and the folks at State are being bombarded by the same mind rays and toxic gasses that Zelaya claims the Israelis are assaulting him with while he’s holed up inside the Brazilian embassy. Let’s hope that all parties come to their senses, quit repeating this tired, and now debunked, assertion of a coup, restore their aid, and look forward to recognizing the outcome of the legitimate, peaceful Honduran elections in November.
I mean, although Chavez is disappointed, I’m sure, that he can’t hang out the mission accomplished flag, he can smell the hope!, can you? Must be an affectation of all of the Smart Power ! that’s been excercised of late…
